Foundation Phase
Grade R
In Grade R, we create a happy, safe, and stimulating environment where children learn through play. Play-based learning allows learners to explore the world around them while discovering themselves – starting with their bodies and senses and gradually developing their emotions, social skills, and thinking abilities.
Within the classroom, children learn important life skills such as taking turns, sharing, and being kind and respectful friends. We teach that “please” and “thank you” are still magic words, and we encourage a growth mindset by helping learners say, “I’ll try my best” rather than “I can’t.” Creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, and imagination are actively encouraged. By the end of the year, our goal is to nurture confident, well-rounded learners who are ready for formal schooling.
Grade 1
In Grade 1, we follow the CAPS curriculum alongside the Jolly Phonics Programme to support the development of strong reading and language skills. Meaningful learning opportunities are created to promote holistic development, ensuring that every learner is supported academically, socially, and emotionally.
Lessons are interactive and engaging, making use of concrete resources that allow learners to learn through hands-on activities and play. Our classroom environment is positive, nurturing, and inclusive, encouraging curiosity, exploration, and teamwork. As learners progress through the year, they build confidence, independence, and lasting friendships.
Grade 2
Grade 2 is a warm and welcoming space where every learner is valued and included. We celebrate diversity and encourage learners to express themselves confidently while developing respect and appreciation for others. A positive and supportive classroom environment helps foster a love of learning that can last a lifetime.
Learners enjoy engaging lessons on the mat, at their tables, using whiteboards, and through multimedia resources. Creative activities, particularly art, provide opportunities for self-expression and imagination. Learners are encouraged to show responsibility, leadership, and to be positive role models. Improvements in academics, behaviour, kindness, and care for the environment are recognised and rewarded.
Grade 3
Grade 3 offers a balanced combination of hard work and fun. Learning is connected to real-life experiences, helping learners understand the relevance of what they are taught. We believe there is a time to focus and a time to enjoy learning through play, humour, and creativity.
A scaffolding approach is used in the classroom: learners who excel are encouraged to extend their thinking and creativity, while those needing extra support receive individual or small-group intervention. Games, challenges, riddles, and puzzles form part of the learning process, making lessons engaging and enjoyable while building confidence and independence.
